Al Hoceima is a city in the north of Morocco in the Rif area on the Mediterranean coast. It is the capital city of the Al Hoceima Province.

Culture and history

Al Hoceima is situated in the territory of the Ait Waryagher and Ibaqouyen tribes of the Rif region, who speak a Riffian variety of the Berber language locally called Tmazight or Tarifit. Morocco was finally colonized by France and Spain from 1912 until March, 1956. In the Province of Al Hoceima the Moroccan political and military leader Abdel Krim started a large-scale revolt by a coalition of Riffian tribes against the French and Spanish colonization. His guerrilla tactics, which included the first-ever use of tunneling as a technique of modern warfare, directly influenced other famous revolutionists like Ho Chi Minh and Che Guevara. Many other oppressed countries took the Riffian revolt as an example to strive for indepence.

Tourism and things to do

The city is a known destination for tourists despite its relatively small size.  It is characterized by many beautiful beaches like Quemado, Sfiha and its mountainous rocky areas. Some beaches are steps away from the city or from the hotels and some are more difficult to reach but therefore more private and quiet. If you like a strong and long journey on foot you can walk from the Quemado beach (also simply known as Playa) to the National Park Al-Hoceima. Al Hoceima has alsno enough good restaurants and places to eat.

Sfiha Beach

Sfiha has a remarkable repetition for its quietness, and cleanse, swimming there is another thing. The beach looks out on the Spanish-controlled post-colonial relic, El Penon de Alhucemas.  A couple of other Spanish islands are also visible to the west. The beach is mostly well maintained and lined with umbrella seating and nice restaurants in the summer. You can also hire pedalos and jetskis on the beach.

Al Hoceima National Park

Don't forget to visit the National Park while you're in Al Hoceima. In the area you can also visit a 800 years old mosque and its old Berber village in Adouz. You can see a lot of wonderful landscape on every step you take in there and it's known among hikers and climbers.
